Information Processing in Primate Retinal Cone Pathways: A Model
نویسندگان
چکیده
At the retinal level, the strategies utilized by biological visual systems allow them to outperform machine vision systems, serving to motivate the design of electronic or \smart" sensors based on similar principles. Design of such sensors in silicon rst requires a model of retinal information processing which captures the essential features exhibited by biological retinas. In this report, a simple retinal model is presented, which qualitatively accounts for the achromatic information processing in the primate cone system. The computer retina model exhibits many of the properties found in biological retin as such as data reduction through non-uniform sampling, adaptation to a large dynamic range of illumination levels, variation of visual acuity with illumination level, and enhancement of spatiotemporal contrast information. Efficiency of Information Coding in Various L/M Retinal Cone Ratios
Previous evidence has shown that the number of L and M cones in retina varies significantly between subjects. However, it is not clear how the variation of L/M ratio changes the behavioral performance of the subject. A model of transformation of data from retina to visual cortex for evaluation of various L/M cones ratios is presented. While L/M cone ratios close to 1 brings the best performance...
متن کاملSequential processing in vision: The interaction of sensitivity regulation and temporal dynamics
The goal of this work was to describe the interaction of sensitivity regulation and temporal dynamics through the primate retina. A linear systems model was used to describe the temporal amplitude sensitivity at different retinal illuminances. Predictions for the primate H1 horizontal cell were taken as the starting point. The H1 model incorporated an early time-dependent stage of sensitivity r...

Retinal cones are photoreceptors for daylight vision. For lower vertebrates, cones are known to give monophasic, hyperpolarizing responses to light flashes. For primate cones, however, they have been reported to give strongly biphasic flash responses, with an initial hyperpolarization followed by a depolarization beyond the dark level, now a textbook dogma. We have reexamined this primate-cone ...
متن کاملContribution of retinal neurons to d-wave of primate photopic electroretinograms
The purpose of this study was to determine the contribution of different types of retinal neurons to the d-wave of the primate electroretinogram using pharmacological agents. NMDA + TTX was used to suppress inner retinal activity, and APB and PDA to block the activity of the ON- and OFF-pathways, respectively. Results indicated that the inner retinal neurons had a small but certain contribution...
متن کاملParallel pathways for spectral coding in primate retina.
The primate retina is an exciting focus in neuroscience, where recent data from molecular genetics, adaptive optics, anatomy, and physiology, together with measures of human visual performance, are converging to provide new insights into the retinal origins of color vision. Trichromatic color vision begins when the image is sampled by short- (S), middle- (M) and long- (L) wavelength-sensitive c...
